Denise Woodward-Detrich is the Director of the Lee Gallery in the Department of Art at Clemson University.  Woodward-Detrich’s creative research investigates the relationship between the defined parameters of functional objects and the interpretive aspects of visual and tactile memory. Her investigation into function is positioned on the visceral experience of touch, on the relationship between form, surface and function and on the layered memories gained through the accumulated experience of using utilitarian forms.

Before joining Clemson University Ms. Woodward-Detrich served as a Master Instructor at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities.  She received her MFA in Ceramics at the New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University and has maintained an active exhibitions record having been invited to participate in many national exhibitions.  Ms. Woodward-Detrich has given workshops in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida, was the juror for “Artist of the Upstate”, Greenville, SC and has been included in publications such as Wheel Thrown Pottery by Don Davis, Best of Pottery, published by Rockport Publishers and Studio Potter magazine. Recently she curated the exhibition “Pretty Tough” which examined the ways in which artists look beyond the façade to explore the by-products of a globally connected world.

CURATORIAL

2019

Pretty Tough, January 21-March 5, 2019, Lee Gallery. Artists include Michael Ashkin, Cynthia Camlin, Julie Dermansky, Joelle Dietrick, Diane Fox, Stacy Isenbarger, Lori Larusso and Michael Marks. Pretty Tough examines the ways in which artists look beyond the facade to explore the by-products and effects of a globally connected world. Works in the exhibit investigate the seemingly traditional roles of nature, culture and the built environment but peer in from the edges defining alternative narratives to the conventional conditions of domestic, digital, economic and environmental histories.

Immaterial Artifacts: The work of Tom Schmidt, August 26 – October 17, 2019, Lee Gallery, Clemson University. Craft media has always been at the forefront of developments in new technology. The work of Tom Schmidt represents a spectrum of sculptural objects which attempts to tease apart the amorphous state of ceramics and craft in a post-digital age.
